Opportunity Information: Apply for DOS GEO 23 002 01092023

The Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF 2023) is a competitive grant opportunity announced by the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi for alumni of U.S. government-funded or U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs. The purpose of the fund is to help exchange alumni build on the skills, knowledge, and professional connections they gained during their U.S. exchange experiences by designing and carrying out practical, community-focused projects that respond to real local or global challenges. AEIF has been running since 2011 and has supported nearly 500 alumni-led projects worldwide, and the 2023 round in Georgia is framed around supporting Georgia's further integration with the West and strengthening the country as a more democratic and stable society.

Applicants must apply as a team rather than as a single individual. The Embassy is looking for proposals developed and managed by teams of at least two alumni who meet the eligibility requirements. Projects are expected to be public service oriented and should align with priority themes the Embassy identified for this cycle. Those themes include expanding exposure to American culture and shared values, especially outside major urban centers; strengthening economic prosperity through innovation, entrepreneurship, and improvements to the digital economy; reinforcing democratic values; promoting community integration, inclusion, and tolerance; building skills and opportunities for women, youth, and people with disabilities; supporting de-occupation and reconciliation efforts; and preserving culture in rural areas or among marginalized communities. In other words, proposals should be grounded in tangible community needs while clearly reflecting these broader strategic priorities.

Beyond matching at least one theme, AEIF projects must also advance at least one of the fund's core alumni-development goals. Specifically, projects should either bring together alumni from different U.S. exchange programs to build or expand an alumni network capable of sustained collaboration; strengthen relationships between alumni and the U.S. government by working together on shared goals and challenges; or help alumni deepen their leadership capacity through the design and implementation of locally relevant initiatives. The program is therefore not only about delivering an outcome for a target community, but also about strengthening alumni cooperation, long-term networks, and leadership in ways that endure beyond the grant period.

From a funding and timeline standpoint, AEIF 2023 is offered through U.S. Department of State funding (U.S. Mission to Georgia) under Funding Opportunity Number DOS-GEO-23-002-01092023, posted on January 9, 2023. Awards are expected to range from $5,000 to $35,000, with an award ceiling of $35,000, and the Embassy anticipated making about two awards. The funding instrument is described as a grant and may also be structured as a fixed amount award or cooperative agreement, meaning recipients should be prepared for standard U.S. government grant administration, reporting expectations, and coordination requirements as applicable. Proposed projects should be designed to finish within 12 months or less, and the expected start date for selected projects is September 2023.

Applications for this round were to be submitted by email to TbilisiGrants@state.gov with the subject line "AEIF 2023" by February 24, 2023 at 1800 (local time as stated). Eligible applicants are individuals (exchange program alumni), but the program requires that proposals be submitted as a team of at least two alumni.
